Why I Became A Financial Advisor

By Bryan Lee, CFP®, MBA

When it comes to choosing a career, some people are drawn to certain jobs or industries because of a passion, a natural aptitude, or an exciting opportunity. For me personally, I entered the financial industry to follow an interest I’ve always had in investing and financial management. But once I got my feet wet in the job, I saw firsthand that while the industry was providing valuable services for people, it wasn’t putting the clients first. I wanted to play a part in reinventing how a financial services company can serve people better, making a positive impact on their lives.

Getting Started

I started my career by getting a firm foundation of knowledge, earning my Bachelor of Business Administration in finance from the University of North Texas. During this time, I started working for Fidelity Investments while also obtaining an MBA in international finance and the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification. As a CFP® professional, my passion for the work I did grew, and I began seeing a real need for objective and independent financial advice, advice people could rely on because it’s free from conflict and puts them first. That’s why, six years into my career, I made a change, and the rest is history.

My Career Today

More than 20 years ago, I launched out on my own and founded Strategic Financial Planning, Inc., to provide fee-only, independent, fiduciary financial planning and investment advisory services to individuals and small businesses using a unique financial life planning approach and process. I spend my days focusing on my clients and their needs, building long-lasting relationships so I can help them with every challenge they face or milestone they reach as they go through life.

My mission is to help each client organize, protect, and grow the assets that they count on to provide for them and their family. I created this firm so that my team and I could focus on you as a person first, only turning to the numbers and financial software when we’ve learned who you are and what you want out of life.

Hurdles and Triumphs

I’ve never regretted the path my career has taken, but that’s not to say it’s all been smooth sailing! Just like any other career, there are difficult days and obstacles in the way. My greatest challenge is a desire to help as many people as possible but not having the time, manpower, and resources to accomplish that. It’s difficult to be selective when choosing whom to work with, but we believe that partnering with those who are the right fit is what brings the greatest results.

Challenges aside, there’s just nothing like watching our clients get the opportunity to live the lifestyle they desire and reach goals they never thought possible until we started working together. I consider it an honor to be invited into someone’s life in this way and I take that responsibility seriously. Plus, I just flat-out love what I do. You can’t ask for more than that!
